Simon Rutherford - Wairakei School Artist in Residence
We are thrilled to be able to have part of our holistic curriculum, Simon sharing his weaving skills with us as an Artist in Residence for the next three weeks.
Simon Rutherford has had a long association with our school, particularly in the Senior part of the school at Year 5 camps and with the Year 6 children in the Sailing programme.
Simon is an accomplished weaver of harakeke (flax) and is well known for his authentic use of this material to create traditional and modern pieces of work which are both functional and as artworks.
A number of schools in Canterbury have special taonga (treasures) which have been created by Simon which now stand as part of the school environment.
Feel free to come down and have a look at what Simon is doing, and even take part in some weaving yourself.
