Our school is looking beautiful!
December 16 2016, and the first piece of demolition began on our school into the transformation it is becoming.
Visit this article2017 has been a year of great change for Wairakei School.
The nearly $2 million redevelopment of our school began at the end of last year with the first demolition taking place in what was Rooms 1 & 2. The 2017 year started with the Wairere Year 5 & 6 team working in the hall as their learning space, while Otakaro Year 1 & 2 team moved to the old library and hub area to use as their temporary space. The Wai-iti Year 3 & 4 team all moved to the old Junior Block at the same time, to allow for simultaneous demolition and build of Blocks 1 and 2. The timeframe was extended several times, until finally the Wai-iti and Wairere Learning Communities were able to move into their new spaces in in Term 2 and 3 respectively. Now it was all go for the Otakaro Learnjng Community to have their space ready for them to enjoy for the final term.
Although there has been finishing work being completed right up until the end of 2017, we are more than happy with the finished product. We have purpose designed learning spaces which are flexible, acoustically sympathetic, bright and airy.
The staff and children have worked through the challenges of the year well, and with the exciting 2018 year looming, we are all ready to enjoy our school environment even more. There is still some areas to develop after we work through our plan with the Ministry of Education ... but for now we enjoy our absolutely brilliant school.
Keep smiling
Shane Buckner
