Mr. Hume’s electricity talk

James EnglishSeptember 12, 2017

Mr. Hume from Meridian Energy comes to talk to Wairere.

On the 8th of September Mr. Hume came to Wairakei school talk to Wairere about electricity. The first thing he talked about were the dams that power the hydro stations.  One dam powers 500,000 houses! He talked about wind turbines as well.  He talked about the price of wind turbines (they start at $10 million!), how they work, and the best place to build them and how to build them as well. Meridian has a wind farm in Antarctica.  The turbines stop if the temperature goes below -40 degrees celsius.   Miss. Hume and Zan made a small wind turbine model and had a toy car for scale.

At the end of the talk, Mr. Hume showed us an electric car that didn’t vibrate, it was almost silent and made zero emissions! All you have to do is charge it and it will work. Then we had a quiz and if you got a question right you got a yo-yo.

And yes, Mr. Hume is Miss. Humes Dad!
