WBHS SENIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2020
This young man is an outstanding athlete. His dedication, motivation and resilience are to be admired. He has had many highlights during 2020, to follow are just a few.
First up, we have the Challenge Wanaka Half where he rode 90km as the cyclist in a team which also included a couple of recent old boys. Their team was the first male team home and they came an incredible 2nd overall out of 186 teams. 2nd only to a team of professional athletes. Another outstanding achievement was his 47km mountainbike ride at the Motatapu event. This event involved 1214m of climbing with the highest peak being 875m. He completed the 47km race in just over 2 hours and 8 minutes. Not only did this young man win the U19 event, he also came 2nd overall out of an incredible 1282 competitors. He is also the captain of our very successful 1st V basketball team. Under his leadership the team won the Otago Secondary Schools Senior Championship for the first time. He is our school senior cross country champion for 2020 setting a new school record of 26 minutes and 55 seconds. He was also a standout in the distance events at our school athletic sports. He won the Aoraki Secondary Schools Cross Country mountainbiking title and was over 6 minutes clear of the 2nd placegetter. He has an impressive list of recent achievements in endurance events for mountainbiking competing in either a mens team or as an individual. This young man is also an outstanding basketball referee. There is no doubt who our 2020 Sportsman of the Year is, congratulations Tasman (Taz) Selfe.
