McCallum Cup - 1st XI Cricket report

WBHS —

McCallum Cup 2021 saw the Waitaki First XI take on John McGlashan in their first game of the tournament in Dunedin this labour weekend. JMC batted first, posting a healthy total of 121/6.

Quinn Wardle 3 for 22 off 4 overs George Mavor 1 for 9 off 4 oversAngus Ruddenklau 1 for 23 off 4 oversWBHS getting off to a great start with the bat, Thomas Anderson and Matt Stewart had an opening partnership of 54 setting a great platform for the team but were unable to capitalise on this with them team all out for 104 off our 20. Still a good game and the boys fought hard. The afternoon game saw us take on OBHS seniors. WBHS batting first making a very good total of 157/3. Standouts with the bat were Matt Stewart 69 not out and Liam Mavor 44. Following up with a clinical bowling performance WBHS kept OBHS to a total of 104 all out. Standouts Hunter Wardle 3 for 12 off 4 overs, Angus Ruddenklau 2 for 26 off 3 overs, Lochie Mavor 1 for 16 off 4 overs and an amazing run out from Alex Wilson. On the second day WBHS started off facing a strong Wakatipu side (who eventually took out the competition) batting first and posting 123/6. Standouts in our batting line up were Matt Stewart 63, Liam Mavor 22, Alex Wilson 18 not out. Wakatipu started their run chase in a strong fashion before losing regular wickets turning it into a close game. However Wakatipu won in the end with 2 wickets in hand and 1 over to spare. Samuel Petrie bowled 3 for 9 off 4 oversThomas Anderson 3 for 25 off 4 overs Hunter Wardle 1 for 6 off 3 overs With changes to the batting and bowling line up in the WBHS innings, the end result was a win to WBHS with Matt Stewart and Hunter Wardle reaching the target both not out on 19 and 16 respectively. All in all a great weekend of cricket Massive congratulations to Matt Stewart who was deservedly awarded the MVP of the tournament scoring 2 half century’s, making a total of 162 runs and giving him an 81 run average. He was 70 runs ahead of the next top batter. Well done Matt!
