Prefect Role: Academic Prefect / Head of Don

Why did I want to become a prefect?

When I went to school in Hong Kong, the only leadership positions were house captains, there were no prefects of any kind. The change to Waitaki Boys brought many challenges, including cultural and social changes. Without the help of the 2021 prefects, my transition into Waitaki Boys wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did. The immediate act of kindness, and empathy from the 2021 prefects inspired my own goal to achieve prefect status in my final high school year. An amalgamation of events throughout my first year at Waitaki boys brought me to my final high school year far quicker than expected. With this change brought pressure to keep up with the raised standard level and still achieve my set goals. In summary, without the constant encouragement of the 2021 prefects, this whole experience would have been a whole lot harsher, and this is what made me want to become a prefect.

What is my role/what can I bring to the role?

My role as a prefect this year is to inspire and encourage the boys to become the best man that they could be. I am the academic prefect, alongside Diederick Van Basten. This means that I oversee the academic standards of the young Waitakians and encourage these young men to achieve to the highest degree. Alongside being an academic prefect, I am the Head of Don house. Don is the house name of the hostel boys. As Head of Hostel, I strive to incentivize the boys to achieve to their highest capability whether it be in sports or academics. I also pride myself in tutoring any boys who may need help with schoolwork and making sure they understand the process of learning and answering questions.

What matters most to me?

To me, my friends and family are who matter most to me. This is mainly because they are the underlying factor that have driven me to achieve my goals and embed myself within the brotherhood culture of Waitaki boys. Without the encouragement of my friends and family, I would not be the man I am today.

One thing I love about WBHS

Although it is hard to find only one thing that I love about Waitaki Boys High school there is one thing that stands out. The one thing I love most about Waitaki Boys is the brotherhood culture that holds the boys together. This brotherly connection is what makes Waitaki boys such a positively idiosyncratic school.

What are my interests?

My interests are Rugby, Calculus, Chemistry, and physics. This is mainly because I find them challenging and I thoroughly enjoy challenges.

Goals for 2022

In 2022, my main goal is to achieve an overall excellence endorsement as well as excellence endorsements in every subject. Alongside this, I make it my goal to get a cap for the Waitaki Boys First XV rugby team.
