Year 13 Geography Trip

Ms P Holdsworth, Geography Teacher —

On Tuesday 9th March the Y13 Geographers had a full-on day in Dunedin looking at fluvial processes and human modifications on the Leith Stream.

The girls showed resilience, as our overnight field trip was altered to a big day, as a result of Covid levels changing to level 2 the week before. Luckily, we were able to have Sarah Magers, Senior Lecturer in Hydrology at Otago University, to explain to us about how fluvial processes operate in the Leith stream in terms of erosion, transportation and deposition. She showed us some of the equipment students can use to measure flow, which was more sophisticated than our timing ping pong balls. The girls were busy measuring the width, depth and timing the river flow of four sites. They found out that the Leith Stream has been highly modified due to being a flood threat in the Dunedin urban area. A busy but good day was had by all and thanks to Ms Margaret Williams who accompanied us on the trip.
