New Zealand Club Rowing Championships

Mrs Wright - TIC Rowing —

The New Zealand Rowing Championships.

The pinnacle of club rowing regattas in the country took place at Lake Karapiro, Waikato, from the 13th to the 17th of February, and the Oamaru Rowing Club had a successful regatta. Our talented rowers, including a commendable representation of WGHS students, demonstrated their skills and commitment throughout the competition.

All of our WGHS students secured places in the A finals, so they ranked among the top 8 crews in New Zealand in their respective categories. In the Women's U22 Single Sculls category, Emma Spittle (Year 13 2023) exhibited her skill and determination, finishing an impressive 5th in a highly competitive field. The Women's Novice Coxed 4 event witnessed outstanding performances from Oamaru 1, featuring Bridget Spittle and Hanna Strachan, who clinched a well-deserved silver medal with the crew mates from SKC. Oamaru 2, represented by Tessa Wright and Emily Wainwright, secured a respectable 7th place in the same category.

The Women's Novice Coxed 8 event saw the combined efforts of Bridget Spittle, Hanna Strachen, Emily Wainwright and Tessa Wright, and SKC students, resulting in a commendable 4th place finish. Emma Spittle continued her success in the Women's Club Single Sculls, earning a bronze medal for her exceptional performance. In the Women's Senior Single Sculls, finished 7th in a competitive field.

The Oamaru Rowing Club emerged with an impressive haul of 2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals. Eleven crews secured spots in A finals, while three crews earned places in B finals, underscoring the depth of talent within our club.

Our focus now shifts to the upcoming school rowing season. The South Island Secondary Schools Regatta awaits us at the end of the month, and following that, the Aon Maadi Regatta is the National Championship for school rowing in New Zealand at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, starting March 18. I was very proud of the way our students represented us. I encourage students to join us next season.
