Netball Tournament

Mrs L Lane, TIC Netball —

Junior South Island Secondary Schools

10A team

Day 1 results:

Game 1: against Marlborough, drew 27 all

Game 2: against Avonside, won 38-19

Game 3: against Rangiora, lost 20-48

Because of our draw, it came down to points difference and we narrowly missed out on being in the top 16, so we were now playing off for 17th-32nd.

Day 2 results:

Game 1: against Lincoln, won 23-16 in torrential rain and wind - girls had to really dig deep as they had never played in conditions like that.

Unfortunately this result didn't count as all play was called off after that and it went straight to quarter finals based on the previous day's pool play results.

Day 3 results:

Game 1: Quarter final against Mt Aspiring College - they ended up defaulting as they all got a vomiting bug!

Game 2: Semi final against Marian College - we won 26-24 - it was a draw with about 2 minutes to go, so girls had to really work hard for the win.

Game 3: Final against Nelson Girls - we lost 19-31 - final placing 18th out of 32.

Highlight of the tournament:

Being awarded the sportsmanship award for the whole year 10 grade. This was out of 32 teams and every umpire we had gave us a score. At the end of the 3 days all the scores were added up and the team with the highest score was awarded this. It was a very proud moment for everyone as the girls showed resilience and fair play throughout the tournament, despite some tough battles and terrible weather conditions. Go Waitaki!

Another proud Waitaki moment was when both teams got together and with the very generous support of Sarah Newlands, went and bought craft items to create presents for children in hospital. It was the perfect way to spend a very wet afternoon and the messages they wrote were beautiful. Ella and Lesieli delivered these to the hospital the next morning and I think the teams will receive letters back from the children who receive the gifts. Such a beautiful thing to do.

School can be really proud of these girls, they were a pleasure to take away.

Report from Anna Fraser - manager of the 10A team

9A team

Day 1

Garin College 34 - 25 win

Ashburton 27 - 27

Rangi Ruru 14 - 39 loss

As with the Year 10 team, the draw and a lack of points differential cost the team and put them into the bottom half of the draw to play for 17th - 32nd.

Day 2

No games - rained out

Day 3

Quarter Final v Roncalli 29 - 28 win’

Semi Final v Craighead 27 - 19 win

Final v Wakatipu 38 - 25 win

An outstanding achievement to finish 17th out of 32 teams - if only one more goal had gone in on day 1!!!

At WGHS we are immensely grateful for the hard work and commitment of the coaches, managers, camp mums and umpires
