Reader/Writer Volunteers Needed

Jennifer Devon —

We are looking for volunteers at WGHS.

Each year, like every secondary school in the country, we have a number of students who require special assessment conditions for their NCEA assessments, both internal and external.

This means that someone else reads their examination papers or assessment tasks aloud to them and/or writes down the answers that the student dictates.

Reader/Writer help is used for internal assessment tasks throughout the year, and in November, for the external examinations. NZQA provides remuneration for November examinations whereas, during the school year, the assistance is voluntary.

We want to increase the school’s pool of people available to assist with this. Training and support will be given, and a police check is compulsory due to government regulations. Interested parents, guardians, or other adults must have legible handwriting, spelling, and punctuation ability. Handwriting needs to be fluent enough to complete the task within the time available.

Being a reader/writer is a rewarding experience and a huge practical help for many students, enabling them to perform at their best in NZQA qualifications. They are very grateful for this help and realise its value to them and their futures.

If you would like to join our pool of helpers, please phone Jennifer Devon at (03) 434 8429.

We’d love to talk to you about it!
