Ohau Tree Planting
On a chilly Sunday morning, May 7th, six students and Mr. Wright from our Enviroschools group embarked on a tree-planting mission in Avoca Forest, Ohau.
This project held a special significance as it aimed to help restore Ohau after the devastating fire that occurred in November 2021, which tragically destroyed 54 homes and buildings in the township.
We were pleased to collaborate with the Ohau Conservation Trust and Student Volunteer Army for this tree-planting event. It was especially exciting to see Tilly King, our former Head Girl and Enviroschools leader in 2021, involved in the project. It's great to witness the continued dedication and impact she brings to environmental initiatives.
As part of our planning for 2023, we had envisioned working closely with the Waitaki Boys' Enviro Group. It was fulfilling to see this vision come to fruition, as we joined forces with them to contribute to the community's rebuilding efforts.
Thanks to the Mansfields for providing accommodation in their rebuilt home, Waitaki Boys’ for hosting us for dinner on Saturday night, and Lucianne from Enviroschools for all of her help.
With sleeves rolled up and shovels in hand, and a few laughs we planted each tree, knowing that we were playing a part in the regrowth and restoration of Ohau. Over 1 000 trees planted - not bad for a group of volunteers!
