WGHS SPORT —

WGHS took a group of 14 finalists to the recent 2019 Aoraki Secondary Schools Sports Awards in Timaru.

On Friday 1st November was the annual Aoraki Secondary Schools Sports Awards. Those representing secondary schools in the Aoraki region, comprising of Ashburton to Oamaru and inland to Mt Hutt are chosen as finalists in several categories and come together to celebrate their sporting achievements. 

This year, WGHS had 14 finalists in 10 categories, with 6 of those going on to win their category. Congratulations to:

Holly Beazer - Winner of Female Official in Sport

Mackenzie Phillips - Winner of Female Future Champion in both Badminton and Tennis

Mikayla Bryant - Winner of Female Future Champion in Trapshooting

Millie Robert - Winner of Female Future Champion in Touch

Taneisha Fifita - Winner of Female Future Champion in Netball and Finalist in Female Overall Champion.

Donna Hurst, manager of WGHS Senior A and Wildfire Netball teams was acknowledged as Community Contribution to WGHS Sport.

The other finalists were Stephen Ross, WGHS Netball Coach, in the Coach of the Year category and Simone Hamilton for Badminton, Samantha Atley for Gymsport, Molly Hurst for Netball, Brylee Milmine for Touch, Ashleigh Nicholson for Trapshooting and Maddie Forbes for Contribution to Sport.

It was a very enjoyable night with many very talented teenagers being acknowledged for the hard work and dedication they put into their chosen sport which has resulted in success in local, national and international competitions. Guest speaker, ex Craighead student Hollie Woodhouse gave an inspiring speech about her adventures around the world including ultra marathons in the Sahara desert and Peruvian jungle and an epic crossing of the Greenland ice cap.

Thank you to all those who help our students in their sporting endeavours, whether through, coaching, managing, fundraising, driving to practices and games or washing uniforms, our students couldn't succeed without your support.
