Learning Centre Crafting Project

Ms J Devon, HoL, Learning Centre —

As part of their study towards the New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living Learning Centre pupils have been exploring a range of different crafting activities.

Learning Centre Crafting Project

The idea for Leaf Bowls was born from our exploration around texture, organic form and shape, the natural environment around us and kaitiakitanga. The leaves were all gathered from the school grounds when we returned to school after lockdown. As part of our lockdown studies we had observed the process of seasonal change and had found enjoyment and purpose in our daily walks and daily Meets discussing these and learning the reasons for them. Watching these seasonal changes and taking pleasure from some of the spectacular autumn colour that showed itself in the Waitaki at that time was a formative part of our combined lockdown experience and taught us all that pleasure can be found in the simplest of places in the natural world about us if we take the time and open our eyes.

The Learning Centre’s leaf bowls are currently on display in the school library. Pop in and have a look, they have been crafted with love and care and are a reflection upon our time in lockdown.
