The "Amazing Oamaru Race”

Mrs L Lane, TIC The Amazing Oamaru Race —

45 intrepid year 9 and 10 students undertook the 2021 Amazing Oamaru Race as part of our activities day programme.

Once organised into groups the students were introduced to their first mission for the day which was to make a protective cradle for the egg that had to accompany them on their adventures. Each egg was given a name and much time was spent creating the personality of the egg (Tiffany was particularly attractive) and in wrapping them up to - hopefully - keep them safe throughout the day.

The teams were then issued with the challenges; 16 clues to lead them to locations around school and the Oamaru townsite and 10 challenges for the team to do along the way. The winners would be the team that solved the most clues, completed the most challenges and finished the fastest. All 9 teams did an amazing job with some very creative solutions to the clues and challenges.

After lunch down at Friendly Bay came the second part of the team challenge; the egg drop from the bridge over the old railway! Unfortunately, this was an epic fail for all teams - maybe the stress of the day so far was too much for the eggs - and the team who named their egg “scrambled” were truly justified in their choice!

Finally, the teams were engaged in creating beach art with the added help of icecream to feed the imagination. Again, there were some amazingly creative designs which made the judges’ decision even more difficult.

All participants were incredible ambassadors for WGHS and it made us very proud to see them work in such a cooperative, creative, resilient and good humoured manner throughout the entire day.
