2020 Quadrangular Interschool

WGHS SPORT —

Another successful Quadrangular Interschool took place this week, with a new format!

On Monday 3rd August WGHS Senior A Netball, Basketball and 1st XI Hockey headed to Timaru for our annual Quadrangular interschool with Christchurch, Timaru and Avonside Girls' High Schools. Started in 1980, this was the 40th time these four schools had come together to gain some valuable experience in the lead up to Winter tournament week. A hint of sadness for one particular participant, Mr Paul Selbie attended his 31st and last gathering. We thank him for his huge contribution as teacher in charge, coach, manager and referee over the past 31 years to this interschool!

This year ran a little different. A one day format has been adopted since 2018 to reduce the amount of time students are out of class and the amount of time coaches, managers and other volunteers are taking from work and family commitments. In addition, as this year's hosts, WGHS opted to hold the event at Aorangi Stadium in Timaru, the only location which allows all teams to compete at the same venue which creates a much more inclusive and supportive atmosphere. This also means the Chch based schools can travel to and from the event in one day, saving the need for billeting or other accommodation. It was decided by the four Principal's who all came to Timaru that this would remain the format going forward. Thank you to Mrs Viv Hay who organised and ran the catering for the day including afternoon tea for over 150 players!

Results:

WGHS Netball won two of their three games, defeating Timaru and Avonside. The hockey team had a close loss against Timaru and a win against Avonside. A much stronger Chch hockey team easily eclipsed the other three schools. Waitaki Basketball were unable to secure a win, but the young team gained some valuable experience. Christchurch Girls' High were the overall winners on the day, followed by Avonside. Timaru and Waitaki finished on even points, with Timaru taking 3rd place on goal difference.
