Year 12 Geography Camp
2nd and 3rd March 2023
Y12 Geography Camp Aoraki/Mt Cook
At the end of last week, 28 Year 12 geography students along with three teachers travelled up the valley into Mount Cook. First of all, we walked up the Red Tarns along with Matt from DOC track to collect data like altitude, the height of vegetation, and temperature for our internal. On Thursday, we walked to the Tasman lake, and we got a good look at the glacier and how it is breaking off (Calving). We also visited the Mount Cook DoC i-site and Ray talked to us about how glaciers are made and what causes them to erode. At the I-site, we were able to collect more data which showed us how they farmed the land at Mount Cook and what impacts Maori and tourism have had. After lunch, we boarded an eight-seater plane to fly out over the Tasman lake and onto the Tasman glacier. This was an awesome experience. The plane did four trips to ensure everyone had this awesome experience. On the last day, we walked part of the Hooker Valley track. We visited Freda Du Faur’s rock, she was the first woman to climb Mount Cook in a dress, and then travelled back home on Friday afternoon. A big thank you to all the teachers for enabling us to go on this trip.
