Aoraki Junior Sports Week Badminton Festival

Mrs D Roberts, TIC Badminton —

On Friday November 20th, Waitaki Girls' HS took 6 teams of four or five players each to Timaru to take part in the Aoraki SS junior festival.

As the original tournament had been cancelled due to Level 2 restrictions this tournament was a great opportunity for Year 9 and 10 players who had been training all season to put their skills into practice. As there is no local competition for badminton in Oamaru it is difficult for our players to play games of badminton against other schools so this was a big challenge for them. Each team played four or five matches involving both singles and doubles over the day against schools from Oamaru, TImaru and Aoraki country schools. The competition was tough as the boys and girls sections were combined and the day was exhausting for the players but Waitaki played strongly to achieve great results.

The Year 10 teams won all of their games even the ones against the boys’ schools and the Year 9 teams were also very successful winning most of their matches.

The girls represented Waitaki Girls High School superbly and looked great in their uniforms. Thanks very much to Mrs Aker for her help and support throughout the day.
