Waitaki Girls’ Future Farmers

Mrs M Searle, Pathways Co-ordinator —

Jemma Buchanan and Brylee Lemm have studied Agriculture throughout their time at Waitaki Girls’ High School. Along with school classes, they’ve completed Telford studies and farm work placements through the school’s Gateway program.

Last week their commitment, passion and enthusiasm for farming was rewarded when they both received the exciting news that they’ve been accepted into “Growing Future Farmers” a new farm based training programme.

The two year programme began in the North Island and next year is the first time it’s being offered in the South Island. Students receive both practical on farm training and classroom teaching in everything from 4WD driving through to fencing, chainsaw use, animal health care and dog training. As part of the programme students receive 2 puppies and will be taught how to train them to become working farm dogs.

Earlier this year the Growing Future Farmers charitable trust put out a call in the Kurow and Winton areas for farmers who wished to be involved in the programme supporting young people into farming. Farms that have been brought into the programme will provide the workplace setting for a student and support to learn practical skills. They’ll also provide accommodation and allow the student time off farm to attend training workshops.

Jemma and Brylee will be part of a group of 60 students on the programme across New Zealand (12 in the South Island) and when they graduate will be awarded the Growing Future Farmers Essential Farm Skills certification along with an NZQA Level 3 qualification in agriculture and will be work-ready.

We at Waitaki Girls’ High School look forward to tracking the progress of our pioneering Growing Future Farmer trainees!
