Sarah Jamison - NZ Touch Rugby Representative

Ms A McIntosh, TIC Touch —

Sarah played for the New Zealand u16 mixed green team in Auckland last weekend and, although sore and tired, agreed to a short interview.

"Our Tour was meant to be in Australia but due to Covid it was held in Auckland. We were very lucky that Touch NZ was able to still hold a tournament in NZ for all the under 16 Teams.

The toughest challenge was probably playing all the games. We played against very, very good teams that had many Touch Blacks in them. This made it a good challenge for the whole team, an amazing experience.

I learnt many things from the tour, such as new skills that will help to improve my touch game, and that the expectations are high when playing for your country.

My proudest moment was definitely scoring my first try for New Zealand; it was an amazing feeling. Also getting presented with our playing singlet at a special jersey presentation in front of family and friends.

I think my best tip for preparation is to be fit before you get there because if you're not, everything is going to be 10 times harder. For recovery, definitely have hot and cold tubs after a big long day. It helps so much with your sore body and you can’t forget a good old rub down from the physio’s - that’s the best feeling. Mentally, you need plenty of sleep. Also, the team debrief after games help prepare you for the next game and keep positive together as a team."
