Waitaki Girls' High School —

In the last week of 10 Ri have been researching and learning about a topic of their choice - passion project to present to the class. They were not allowed to use PowerPoints and had to come up with different ways to present their information to the class.

Students researched a range of topics from Taylor Swift and her “Girl Boss” powers in re-recording and releasing her music so she had the rights to perform it rather than being controlled by a record company to pollution, human trafficking, different cultures and fast fashion.

Some of the interesting facts we learnt about were:

● The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is 1.6 million sq km big and some of the rubbish is over 50 years old

● Around 300 000 tonnes of fast fashion is buried in landfill each year. Out of the 100 billion clothing items made each year 85% end up in landfill.

● Greek gods were all related and Zeus was the most powerful

● Japan invaded Korea because it was rich in resources and it banned speaking Korean!

● Human Trafficking is a $35 billion industry and 1 million girls are sold into prostitution in Asia each year.

● In Malaysia women wear Baju Kurung (a long top that goes to your knees), kain (long skirt) and todong (hijab) and it is offensive for women to wear revealing clothes.

● Overfishing has caused 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to consist of fishing nets that are endangering the lives of sea turtles and dolphins.
