Winter Tournament Week 2020

WGHS SPORT —

This year's tournament week looked a little different than usual, with many teams unable to attend their usual events due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Most however, managed to attend a replacement tournament run closer to home or with fewer/different teams involved.

Our Badminton team of Mackenzie Phillips, Holly Rayne, Jordyn Phillips, Anna Onuma and Olivia Hamilton headed to the Canterbury Secondary School Champs. This competition was opened up to those outside the Canterbury region due to the National Champs in Porirua being cancelled. Day one and two was the teams event and after an unfortunate pool draw alongside the top ranked team, WGHS were unable to make it to the next round and eventually placed 4th. Day three saw the individual & doubles events where our players came out on top! Mackenzie and Jordyn were Champion & Runner Up in the individual competition. In the doubles competition Mackenzie teamed up with Holly and Jordyn with Anna. The two pairs ended up playing each other in an exciting Waitaki vs Waitaki final where Mackenzie and Holly were the eventual winners. Congratulations to all of the team on some great badminton this week!

WGHS Senior A Netball played in Timaru against teams from South Canterbury through to the Tasman region. The team were unbeaten going into the final day of play, coming up against Cashmere High for their final game which they narrowly lost by 2 points. A great experience and some good competition for the team. We wish them well for the rest of the delayed North Otago season.

Hockey headed to Dunedin this year after the normal multi-tier competition was reduced to premier grade in Christchurch and two other South Island tournaments in Nelson and Dunedin. The young team fought hard and kept margins close during their five matches, unfortunately coming out on the wrong side of the scoreline in the end. The team manager said despite this they had a great tournament experience and represented the school with pride on and off the turf.
