Year 13 - Pendle Witch Trial

Seannah Nuttall, Year 13 —

It is often said that the best way to learn is by doing, and so, to get a better understanding of their new topic, Year 13 History completed their own re-creation of the 1612 Pendle Witch Trial.

Each student represented a real person who was involved in the historic trial, from the local magistrate Robert Nowell to the old local witch “Demdike”. The two judges heard the testimonies of 11 accused witches who were called before the court and then deliberated on what fate they should suffer. Unfortunately for the witches of Year 13 History only two received a not guilty verdict while the rest were sentenced to be “hanged”, “burned at the stake”, or in some unique circumstances, both.
