Junior Hockey 6-a-side Festival

Mrs A Jones, Team Manager —

This year's inaugural Aoraki Junior Sports Week included a 6-a-side hockey festival day.

As part of Aoraki Junior Sports Week, WGHS send a mixed team with WBHS to the 6-a-side hockey festival in Timaru.

20 teams were involved from schools across the Aoraki region, split into boys, girls and mixed grades. The day saw fifty 12-minute games with rolling subs played on two half turfs. The festival was designed to encourage non hockey players to have a go, and each team was required to have at least two non registered players, with at least one on the field at all times. In total 49 non registered players participated. Our team had four non players, who all proved to be a great asset to the team, hopefully hockey might have some code converts for 2021!

It was four seasons in one day with sunshine, chilling wind, a heavy downpour, more sunshine and finally some drizzle to end the day.  Thankfully we had the gazebo to keep us out of the wind, dry and shaded!

Thanks to WBHS's Paula Symes for all the photos.
