Model United Nations (UN)
Five students from our school recently participated in a Model UN event organised by Mt. Aspiring College, accompanied by students from Waitaki Boys High.
The event focused on the critical issue of food security and changing ecosystems in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Discussions revolved around the environmental cost of feeding the world, considering the potential threats posed by global warming to millions of people's food security. The students engaged in debates and actively listened to alternate points of view, fostering a collaborative environment throughout the event.
From 10 am to 5 pm, all of the students demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm, actively participating in discussions and interacting with students from other schools. They embraced the opportunity to broaden their understanding of global issues and enhance their diplomatic and communication skills. By addressing global challenges, and considering diverse viewpoints, our students showed critical thinking and open-mindedness.
Our students represented a variety of nations, Iza Brazil assumed the role of Australia, Sophie Rohrbach represented Brazil, Sophie Brown stood for China, Holly Ross advocated for the United Kingdom, and Molly O'Sullivan represented India. I was proud of our student's active involvement and ability to engage in constructive discussions throughout the Model UN event.
By actively participating in events that address global challenges, our students continue to exemplify the spirit of active citizenship and make positive contributions to the world around them. Model UN events are a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain skills and confidence in public speaking and collaboration with others.
