WGHS Old Girls' and Staff Assn. Prefects Evening

Tilly King, Head Girl —

On Wednesday evening this week, the head students and prefects for 2021 were treated to an amazing homemade finger-food supper in the Learning Centre, hosted by the WGHS Old Girls’ and Staff Association.

This event is a yearly tradition and gives the opportunity for ex students and staff to meet and mingle with the prefects and get to know a little more about each other.

The Guest speaker this year was Rebecca Ryan, Editor of The Oamaru Mail, who spoke about her inspiring adventures in journalism, emphasizing the importance of following your heart and having pride, connection and passion.

The head students and prefects then all spoke about their intentions and aspirations for life beyond school. This was followed by the Old Girls sharing their stories and the paths they followed once they left Waitaki Girls’. Hearing the ladies reminisce was the highlight for the night; realising how unique their stories, careers and schooling lives were compared to ours. Careers ranged from hairdressers and teachers to telephone exchangers and book keepers, but once you were married you weren't allowed to work!

It was a very special evening, filled with pride for our school and our community, not to mention a little bit of generational inter-house rivalry!
