Rugby Update

WGHS SPORT —

Combining with SKC for the 2020 season is showing to be a winning formula for our rugby players.

With a school of 400 students, in a rural area, it is not always possible to get enough players for meaningful sport in some codes. This is the case for girls rugby in our area.

This year we had a solid number of players sign up to play but with hugely varying ages and abilities. This makes it difficult to put together a cohesive team for competition. With the only secondary schools girls rugby competition being outside of Oamaru, we needed to rethink how we could make it worthwhile for these girls to get some good game time. We decided to combine our players with those from St Kevin's College and create two teams, one in the U15 10-a-side competition and one in the U18 15's competition. With the support of North Otago Rugby, providing our joint team uniforms and transport to the away games in Timaru, we are having a great season, with both teams 2nd on the current standings table. Both teams play home games at Centennial park for the next round on August 12th. The U18's kick off at 5pm and the U15's at 6:15pm for those who want to come and support.
