A Taonga for Tangaroa

Gemma Matsopoulos —

In Visual Arts the Junior Hub have been looking at the symbolism of the koru and have been busy creating koru art with many meanings.

Room 2 read the myth Tangaroa's Gift about how the paua came to have such a beautiful shell. We looked closely at the colours and the patterns that adorn the paua shell and after much discussion agreed that it was very generous of Tangaroa to gift paua their cloak of colours. We spoke about the koru representing whānau, growth and new beginnings and we decided that WE would gift Tangaroa a Taonga for helping paua and for doing such a good job at taking care of our rocky shore.

We worked very carefully with clay, paint and varnish (and our hands!) to make our special taonga's which are proudly displayed in Room 2.

We didn't stop there!

We read the legend The Fish of Māui and looked closely at how we could portray this story in an artwork. Our large koru’s represent Māui, our wave koru’s represent the ocean. Some of us included Māui’s brothers.

We are learning to use drawing in the development of our koru artworks.

We wanted to represent our own Whānau using our new found skill of drawing the almighty koru!

Inside our jelly fish are our family members represented by a koru.
