Tapa

Anna Hartley —

Rooms 12 & 13 were lucky to have Mrs Tofia come in to show us about how tapa cloths are made. We then had a go at designing our own tapa cloths.

On Wednesday in Rooms 12 & 13 we made tapa cloths and with paper, stencils and pencils we made heaps of patterns.

We watched a video of a lady making a tapa cloth she had some bamboo and cut the outside off. Then she got a shell and wet the bamboo then started scraping the bamboo with the shell. The bamboo started to get wider and wider. Once the bamboo was wider she let it sit for about one hour. There will always be holes in it from where the leaves were growing so she had put another sheet of tapa on the back. Then she got a block of wood with a pattern on it. After that she got her shell and a piece of clay and scraped it on to the tapa cloth. Then she got a wet cloth and wiped the dust to make the orange colour.

My favourite part was watching the video because we got to see how tapa cloths are made. I liked making my own tapa cloth.
