North Zone Athletics

Caroline Brown —

28 children from the Senior and Middle Syndicate represented Wakari School really well at the recent North Zone Athletic Sports. Here are recounts from some of those who participated.

When I could see Jesse coming straight at me I felt a tingle down my spine. I didn't want ruin it for the team. When I touched the baton I ran for my life. I didn't want to come last like I did in sprints. I was lucky nothing went wrong - phew! Then I passed it on to Jake. I was relieved we came second. We made it in Otago Champs - awesome!

It was all depending on that one race!

It was me against like 10 other girls, some of them were even at Balmac!

I felt scared, worried but most of all… EXCITED!

I knew that my mum would always be with me because of my special bracelet she made me.

I heard everyone cheering me on and that made me proud! I saw all of my friends waving their hands at me and my nanny taking photos and videos of me. I was so happy!

As soon as the instructions were said i thought holy mac & cheese iIm doomed and then…..

TAKE YOUR MARKS, GO!

I was waiting to hear the clap to go but I went before the clap because I was nervous. Then when it clapped I ran and I almost came 3rd but I came 4th. I was still happy with it though. In relays we made into the Otago Champs and everyone was happy. In long jump my first jump was the best jump but we were practicing so they didn't count it.The best jump that was counted was 3 metres 22cms and I thought I came 3rd but I came 4th. In the relay we came 2nd and then in the final we didn’t win but we still made it into Otago Champs so we were happy with that.

When I arrived at school I was ready to go to the Caledonian. I had everything that I needed, I was ready to run. When I got in the car to go to the Caledonian I was talking to my friends. We arrived at the Caledonian. The first race I did was the 70 metre sprint - I came 2nd. Then the next race I did was the relay - Brooklyn,Riley, Jesse and I were all in a team - we came 2nd. Then we had a bit of lunch and we had a break before our next race. After the break my next race was the 75 metre sprint. If I won I would go through to the Otago Champs but I came 5th in my race. I still had my relay. It didn’t matter what place we came because we had already made it through to Otago Champs. We didn’t win the relay but still made it to Otago Champs. I felt very nervous during all of my races but it was fun.

I went to the Athletics yesterday and I was in relays, sprints, long jump and the 800m race. I was feeling excited about running. We came second in our relay race which felt amazing. Now our relay team will be going to the Otago Champs which will be a bit scary but I know we'll try our best. It was torture running in the 800m because you had to do two laps of the whole track! I was a bit tired before I started. Even though I hurt my ankle during the race I managed to keep running. The day was pretty cool but also took a long time because there were so many events.

The reason I went to the North Zone athletics was because I qualified in the sprints and relays.

At the north zone athletics my relay team got into the final but didn't get into the Otago Champs. We came 4th. In sprints I didn’t get in anything.

I had lots of fun and still enjoyed the day.
