Bugs Galore!

Carolyn Robins —

We're all about bugs in the Senior Syndicate this term. Read on to find out what we've been up to ...

This term our PBL is Bugs Galore!  Our entry event was a trip to the Otago Museum where we participated in a range of bug activities in Animal Attic.  We then went to Tūhura and the tropical forest where we saw a LOT of bugs including caterpillars, butterflies and some enormous tarantulas.

Back at school we continued our learning about bugs with a deep dive into our driving question:

'How can I as an entomologist teach my buddy about a bug they may have never heard of.'

Knowing that they needed to choose a bug that wasn't very well known meant our tamariki put their thinking caps on and they came up with some bugs to research that even the teachers had never heard of.  These are some of the bugs being researched:

Panda Ant, Blister Beetle Bug, Peacock Spider, Assassin Bug, Tardigrade, Golden Ringed Dragonfly and Yellow Dung Beetle.

Once the bugs were chosen the research started.  Children needed to find out about habitats, adaptations, diet, life cycle, appearance and fun facts for their chosen bug.  All of this research is being written up in a report which includes subheadings, paragraphs, diagrams and a glossary.  When the report is finished tamariki are choosing how to share this information with their buddies. Makey Makey, CoSpaces, Book Creator, dioramas, posters, videos, websites,  are all exciting ways to teach their buddies about these amazing bugs!
