Fledging Visits the Year 2 Hub

Liz Riggir —

Over the last two weeks we have been listening to cheeping coming from a nest above our door. On Wednesday morning some of our Year 2's spotted a wee fledgling sitting in our strawberry plants. The whole Hub was super excited. We researched online and found out it is a sparrow. We talked about how we can help the fledgling survive. Everyone was very careful not to get too close or be noisy near it.

Here is a sample of some of our fabulous writing about our fledgling.

At school today a fledging tried to fly but it did not get that far, it just fell. We are trying to look after it by putting chalk around the fledgling and not shouting. It is 2 weeks old. - Myles

Today Flippy the bird tried to fly. It landed in the strawberry garden. It is two weeks old. We put a chalk around it. Its Mum and Dad will feed it. - Milly

Today Spiderman fell out of the nest into the strawberry patch outside the Year 2 Hub. I like to call it Spiderman because it is very adventurous! - Cooper W

The Mum goes to find food when the babies are 14 days old. The parents keep feeding the baby. The Dad bird looks after the baby while the Mum lays more eggs. - Grace F

Baby sparrows mums and dads have to feed them for 2 whole weeks. When they are 2 weeks old the mum leaves them and the dad stays to feed them more. When they are just born they are bare and have pink skin. They are blind also when they are just born but soon they open their eyes.  - Joel
