Cycle Safety

Anna Ollerenshaw —

The Year 6 students had a wonderful two days learning how to cycle safely.

Year 6 Bike Day

On the first day of biking we learnt how to check if helmets are safe for biking. Then we went into three different groups and we learnt the 3 L's. The first one is lean the bike over and then lift your right leg and then put your leg over the bike and lift it up again. Then we learnt how to look over our shoulders to see if there were any cars coming. It was last week on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday we learnt how to bike on the road. We also learnt how to signal on the road to let cars know where we are going to turn. If you think you will not be able to pass the Year 6 bike day, don't worry you will, it will not be hard. We also learnt how to check our bikes.

We got to play lots of games like musical pizzas. We did that game on our bikes. We also played heaps of relays. It was so much fun!!!! Enjoy your Year 6 bike day year 5s,4s,3s,2s and 1s, when your time comes.

On bike day we started on Monday last week and we had groups that went down to the bottom court. The instructors took their bikes down and they taught us how to keep safe. They taught us how to do a bike check and helmet check. When we finished our bike check we went to figure out which adult we were with. Then we went to bike around cones.

We went around it a few times then we went to line up to do our arms. If you put your right arm out you will turn right. If you put your left arm out you will turn left and if you want to stop you will have to look behind you and then put your arm up and bend it and straighten your hand and then turn into the gutter. That is how you do your arms on the road.

Then we went to go line up and then we played a game that we had to take a bean bag and then we do a loop and then we have to try to put the bean bag back into the tub. We did that about 5 times going around.

On Tuesday we started of doing our bike check and our helmet check then we went to get a yellow stripped coat that people can see people when it is dark, but it was not dark during the day, but it helped people to see us.

Then we went to go around the road and they taught us how to go around the road, but before we did that we got taught how to do the arms properly around on the road. Then our instructor took us to go further on the road and we did our arms when we went into the gutter, we stopped and then put our bikes on the path. Then she let each of us lead on the road and that was fun. Then we biked around a bit and then we had fun on the grass. After that we opened up the gate and then we put our bikes away.
