Fun with Skittles in the Year Two Hub.

Anna Lawson —

No we were not playing skittles, but conducting yet another fascinating experiment, exploring changing states,

We were looking to see how the water in a petrie dish would affect every day skittles (the yummy ones).  First we had to make our predictions, or make a hypothesis of what we thought might happen.  The children had some excellent ideas. They thought the coloured skittles would turn the water into a rainbow pattern. Some of the children thought the colours would dissolve, leaving the skittles white. There was also a group who felt the skittles may make the water bubble.

The children were all very surprised with the end result. After adding four skittles to the water we saw a quite dramatic change. There were four distinct colours that formed in the dish, and the lines between the colours was very distinct. The children described the results as a colour wheel, or divided into four quarters of colour.  My favourite description was Oscar's who stated in looked like a colourful shield.

It has been so much fun this term exploring our world through experimentation.  The children have become wonderful scientists, understanding the process of making predictions before the experiment and recording their results with precision. Well done to all our budding Scientists in the Year 2 Hub.
