Year 5 and 6 Rugby League

Katy Fitzgerald —

In week 9, two Wakari rugby league teams played a match against each other on the top field. Thanks to Mrs Ollerenshaw and Mr Smith for all of their organising behind the scenes.

Here are some of the memories from players involved:

First there were some people that got chosen for the rugby tournament. The tournament was cancelled during level 2 so they made two teams at school - blue and gold - and we played each other.

"The whole Senior Hub watched us play. The blue team won by 2 points. It was really fun. I stopped a bunch of people even though I'm short and I made lots of tackles" - Sanjok

"First off we needed to do a touch trial. Then Mr Smith chose some people for another touch practise. Then he chose the final people who would go to the tournament. There were about 12 of us that made it in. Unfortunately the tournament got postponed so many times that they just cancelled it. Then Mrs Ollerenshaw put some more people in the team and split them in two and we played each other. I got two tries and I ran it straight to make good tackles. Suddenly it was the end of the game and my team won by two tries." - Sam

"I was really thankful to play in the league match because I never thought that I would get into a team. When everybody that signed up was trialing, I was playing basketball and then two people came to get me to trial. When Mr Smith called out the names on Monday I was one of them. I really enjoyed the game." - Crew

""On Monday there was a rugby league game on the top field. There was one gold team and one blue team. Everyone was a good sport to each other and it was a really fair game. Everyone was shouting and cheering for one another on the sideline." - Aleija

"On Monday two teams did rugby league and I was in the blue team. There was also a gold team. We beat the gold team by 2 points and I scored 3 tries. My coach was Atawhai and she was very inspiring. For one try I scored, I ran straight through the middle of the gold team." - Mackley
