Project-Based Learning for all

Chris Smith —

A staff full of life long learners means improving practice at Wakari is ongoing.

Sometimes I pinch myself at the willingness of our teachers to challenge themselves and their beliefs around pedagogy and best practice. At our last two full staff meetings our teachers have been living the Happy, Confident Learners mantra.

 All staff have now completed the PBL 101 3 day course with our facilitators from America. This has meant we are able to all be singing from the same song sheet. Our move to co-operative teaching and collaborative practice has helped immensely with consistent delivery across our rooms. Now we are ensuring that our school-wide PBL plan fits Wakari. To do this we have begun our own PBL topic, lead by Pip Dick, and focusing on initially staff wellness specifically around workload. A survey was conducted and an area of focus has been found. Staff, in teams of 4, vertically grouped across the school will now need to pitch their ideas to the Principal about how we can imporve this area of focus at Wakari.

A couple of important dates I would like to highlight for you;

  • Teacher Only Day will be held on Friday 13 November. School is closed on this day to all pupils.
  • Our first day for next year will be Monday 1 February, with school finishing on Friday 11 December.

Please pop these dates into your dairy.

It is great to return to Alert Level 1 and we look forward to continuing in the Alert Level for as long as possible. It is great to see so many signing up for summer sports, please do look to help out the teams your child or children are in by offering to manage or coach.

Thanks to Katrina Le Cong and her team of students who have been in working with our tamariki around mental wellbeing. The school is continuing to look at all avenues that we can provide to help our children be Happy, Confident Learners.

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support of the School. I hope you enjoy the upcoming school holiday break and kids are about and about playing, as far away from devices as possible.

Regards

Chris
