Super sporting options

Caroline Brown —

We've had a huge range of sporting opportunities happening over the last few weeks. Here's a few of our highlights.

"On Wednesday the 10th of March I went to the Port Chalmers triathlon. I did a 1.5 km run, a 4km bike and a 92m swim. At the end there was the prize giving. I thought I came 13th. At the triathlon I got a hot chocolate, a gummy worm, a vest, a pencil and some magnets. Next year it will be on again. I am hoping to go with other kids from Wakari. When I got home I found out that I came 7th. I missed out on the Otago Triathlon by one place." - Tamati

"At Wakari a lot of sports have been going on including futsal, a great game a lot like soccer. There are about five teams at Wakari. There are two senior teams, Wakari purple and Wakari black. I play in Wakari Purple, we have never lost a game. There are also three middle teams, unfortunately no junior teams. If your child likes soccer but not the tackling then futsal is the sport for them. All in all I think futsal is a great sport for all ages."  - Josh G.

"At school we have had a league trial for our school. If you make the top twenty you have a couple of practices before they choose eight more people to leave the team because you can only have twelve people in a league team. If you make the top twelve you have some practices with a lady called Atawhai. She does New Zealand touch. She is a great touch player and coach. After a few weeks of training we are doing a league game at our school. I think it’s going to be lots of fun." - Carson

"At Wakari School the Senior Syndicate have been doing cricket skills and games with Otago cricket such as shotgun cricket, stump destruction and lots more fun games and skills. It was an awesome opportunity - thanks to Otago Cricket and Jayden for teaching us. Liam’s favourite game was shot gun cricket because he hit the ball really far. Blake’s was stump destruction because it was a good test of your arm and throwing." - Blake K and Liam F

"At Wakari we have been doing cricket skills and playing games like shotgun cricket and stump destruction as well as some relays. My favourite thing was stump destruction because I like being a keeper. Thanks Otago Cricket!" - Fletch

"My favourite sport was soccer because it was very fun playing the rob the nest and having a go playing against other schools and your friends in a game of soccer.

I also liked the cricket season because they were fun when they pushed us to go faster like hot potato with a tennis ball. We also played a bit of cricket where you hit it and run and the folders go and get it and put it on the cones and then you stop.

We also did hockey which was really fun because you can lose control when you push it but sometimes you can accidentally hit it instead of pushing it. My partner Lara was hitting it really hard and I could not get it because it went right past me and I had to run and get it."      - Ora Winklemann

"My favourite sport was soccer because we did a lot of drills. First we did hockey and then soccer and finally cricket. At hockey we did some passes and strikes. Also a game of 1 vs 1.

After that we did soccer and first we had a mini game of soccer. After the games we played rob the nest. After rob the nest we did some drills like jumping, running and playing around.

We also did a Hunger Games game. After the Hunger Games we were supposed to do some refereeing skills but we ran out of time. So instead we did some cricket.

First we did some ball skills. Then we moved on to some batting skills. After cricket every school came down to the turf. Most people said that football was their favourite sport but lots of people said cricket too." - Stacey

"I loved the girls' have a go tournament. It was so much fun. The sports we did was hockey, soccer and cricket. My favourite was all of them because I can not decide out of all of them because they were so much fun. For hockey we got into two groups one of them was the mountains and the other ones were the valleys. It was a race to see who could put the cones the right way. The mountains had to put the cones facing upward and the valley had to put them downwards. The next game we played was that the mountains go on one side and the valleys on the other side of the line then you were in partners. You each had a hockey stick and you had to try and hit the ball to your partner 5 times without letting it go wild. After that we played a game of hockey. When the instructor called out your number you had to go run touch the goal and then try and hit the ball in your goal. Next we played a game of soccer because it was time to move on. The last activity was cricket. We had to get a buddy and we had to try and get the ball with the cone first. Then the instructor said cone and we did all these dances. Next we played a game of cricket and then everybody who came got a photo. It was so much fun I hope they do it next year!" - Lani

"The first thing we did was hockey. The first drill was pushing a ball to a partner.  Then we played a game of multi hockey. The coach called out a number and that’s how many people ran out and played a game of hockey. After hockey we played football. First we did soccer rob the nest. Next we did a game where you had to copy Shane. If you did it wrong you lost and your partner won.  We also did the referee flags. We got taught how to use the referee flags like you would in a soccer game." - Olive
