Sunsmart Procedure Review

Chris Smith —

The Board welcomes input from stakeholders around Sunhats.

As parents you will be aware of some obvious issues with our school regulation hats. This includes but is not limited too;

  • hats often being lost,
  • it is hard to read the children’s names on the dark background,
  • not all hats have chin straps so they tend to fly off when the children are playing,
  • no particular identifying feature to identify that the wearer has his or her own hat on.

There have been various strategies to address these issues and get compliance for hat wearing all of which are quite challenging and so far there does not appear to be a resolution.

There has been suggestions from various parties that the children could bring their own sunsmart, sunsafe hat and that the sunsmart, sunsafe procedure could be changed to reflect this. It is felt that if the children were able to wear a hat of choice that they might take more ownership of the hat and the wearing of it. This would ultimately make the children safe in the sun and hopefully the compliance around the wearing of sunhats more easily managed.

There is a suggestion box in the office please feel free to drop suggestions in here or email  office@wakari.school.nz
