Budding Artists Wow at Dunedin Art Gallery.

Anna Lawson —

Room 4 artists visit the Art Gallery as part of their Print Making unit this term.

The children in Room 4 were lucky enough to visit the Dunedin Art Gallery last Tuesday, while we were there we got to explore a number of different galleries looking at a selection of paintings and prints. The children were encouraged to describe what they saw and how the paintings made them feel. They all noticed that the paintings and prints with bright bold colours were the ones that made them feel happy. The paintings with soft dull colours, made them feel sad.  They then moved on to the gallery with the animal paintings and prints and they were encouraged to spot and talk about the differences of the two mediums.  All of the clever children of Room 4 were able to distinguish the prints, as they had only one or two colours and not as detailed as the paintings they were comparing them too.  After proving themselves as Art Critics, we moved on to the Art Room where we got to create our own prints.

The children started with simple rubbings of coins, and stamps and John explained the printing process.  Then the fun began and the children selected an assortment of animal silhouettes which they copied onto the back of some coloured paper.  They then added texture with white and black paint using ruler edges over the images.  The animals were cut out and glued to coloured sheets. The end results were fabulous.  All of the children enjoyed their trip and created some amazing art work. A big thank you to all the amazing Parents who came along and gave their time and support. Trips like these would not be possible without you.
