Fun times at our Whānau Wānaka! (Family Day/Workshop)

Heather Bonney —

Earlier this month we hosted a Whānau Wānaka (Family Day/Workshop) at Wakari School. This was an opportunity for our families to come together and explore some of our beautiful Māori arts - such as Oamaru stone carving and flax weaving (harakeke).

Thank you to all our families who came along to explore the activities on offer at our Whānau Wānaka. The morning started with an opening karakia and waiata that our enthusiastic children performed for us with Whaea Sue supporting them. Then our families did some fun rākau games together before trying their hand at Oamaru stone carving, flax weaving and creating art through tohu (symbols). We finished off by having a yummy lunch together. We hope you all had as much fun as we did!

A huge thank you to JK for his amazing talents and tireless efforts supporting us with his skills in Oamaru stone carving!

Another huge thank you to Courtnee for sharing her mātauranga toi (knowledge of Māori art) with us and facilitating an art station on the day.
