Hills Cluster Cross Country

Chloe Barton —

On Tuesday some fantastic Year 4, 5 and 6 runners from Wakari school went to Balmacewen Intermediate to compete in the Hills Cluster Cross Country.

All of the children that took part in the Hills Cluster Cross Country performed extremely well and came away with some fantastic results. The teachers and parents there supporting were all very proud, not only of the energy that was put into each race, but also the attitude and sportsmanship shown to other schools. Well done to all of the children that competed and good luck to some of our senior students that have qualified for the Otago champs!

At Hills Cluster we went in year 4-6 groups and raced at Balmac Intermediate. We all had lots of fun when we were racing with other kids from different schools.  I was very proud of myself for coming third out of 26 girls from 7 schools.  At the end when we all finished our race we got handed out 1st, 2nd and 3rd medals and certificates as well.  I was coming last at first from slipping over.  So I could have came 2nd if I didn’t slip, which I was very sad about, but still happy.

Hill cluster cross country was a really fun activity for me and other boys and girls, but it was a challenging race for some of us.  We all did very well and some of us made it in to Otago Champs which is a very big opportunity.  I came 5th and Hayley did very well, she came 3rd in the year 6 race and Jamie came 1st in the year 4 race.

I really enjoyed Hills Cluster because halfway through there was a big muddy hill!  The difficult part was trying to scramble up on my feet from the mud.  When I finished the race, I felt exhausted!

I was really tired after but proud.  The hardest part was going up the L O N G hill.  I think next time I’ll practice a bit more .

We started to warm up before the race.  My favourite bit was all of the people cheering me on and coming 2nd.  I was so happy after and my friend came 1st. The hardest part was not slipping over, but I didn't!

I really enjoyed the hills cluster.  I think the hardest part of the race was probably going up the long steep hill that is very muddy at the top.  Well it really isn't that long and steep but when you are very tired it is.  When I won my race I felt proud and ecstatic.  Next year I hope to win again so I can go to the Otago champs!
