Outdoor Education alive and well

Chris Smith —

The Year 6 cohort are having a ball at Camp Iona.

I had an enjoyable 24 hours at Camp Iona earlier this week. A great cohort of pupils, a superb team of teachers and a hands-on and cooperative group of parent helpers are having a lot of fun experiencing the outdoors just south of Oamaru.

It's a bit disappointing to hear that only 5 helpers have put their hands up to cook the BBQ on a Friday at School. This BBQ more than halves the costs of Year 6 and Year 5 camps. Every pupil benefits. The actual cost of Year 6 camp is around $250 and we currently charge $110 per pupil. We also do not charge adults to attend. If we could muster 20 cooks they would need to do 1 hour once a term on a Friday lunchtime, it would be appreciated if a few more could jump in and help out.

Shortly the Board of Trustees will begin to consult with our Community and neighbouring schools on the Ministry of Educations imposed Enrolment Zone for our School. With recent amendments to the Education Act, the Ministry can now enforce that Schools implement said zones.  You will be able to have your say via a link on our website will which also contain the plethora of information that goes along with such a process. We will let you know via the normal channels; Facebook, Twitter, email and the school site when the portal is live.

Thanks to all those families that supported the Wear Red Appeal yesterday, the School raised $242 for Heart Kids Otago, a superb effort.

Thanks to the majority of families that have ensured their children have stationery, thanks also to the team at school for taking away the stress and hassle that can come when purchasing elsewhere.
