Full STEAM ahead for 2019

Chris Smith —

Welcome to all returning and new Whanau to Wakari School for 2019

It has been great to get the children back to school to begin their learning for this year. Once again it is an exciting year for Wakari. We head into the second year of our Project Based Learning Professional Development with our four neighbouring schools.  To support staff we have hired the cluster facilitator Pip Dick for one day a week to work in our school on top of the support she already provides.

Co-operative Teaching will continue to be our major focus for 2019 also. Staff will complete an Action Research on the models used in our hubs and we will formulate a best practice outline for Wakari School.

Our 'target' for the Ministry of Education this year will be the same as in 2018, based around basic facts. I cannot emphasis enough the importance that instant recall and understanding around basic facts has for further mathematical understanding. Any work at home that you can do with your children will have a positive effect on their progress. If you need help simply ask your child's teacher for some ideas.

Our Year 6 Campers are off on the week-long adventure at Iona currently.  This is a major highlight and learning opportunity for all that attend Wakari and I sincerely thank staff and parents for the running of the camp. One area that we need more support in is the Friday BBQ cooking that raises enough funds each year to halve the cost passed onto families of children in Year 5 and 6.  Please contact the office if you are able to give 1 or 2 Friday lunchtimes to help all of the children at Wakari.

I look forward to working with you all across the year to provide the very best that Wakari School can for its families. As always if there is anything I can be of assistance with pop in to see me.

Regards Chris
