Fun times celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori!

Heather Bonney —

We have had a FABULOUS week at school celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, enjoying learning the language in lots of different ways!

On Monday morning last week Mr Smith started our celebration of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by sharing his mihi over our PA system.  We then had children from every syndicate share their mihi (introduction) over the week, along with a whakatauki (Māori proverb) of the day. Thank you so much to all the superstars who have already shared their mihi at school!

It has been wonderful to see so many more children keen to share their mihi with the school. Because of this fabulous enthusiasm we are continuing to have a "morning mihi" segment to our school days! It has been so beautiful to hear children share their mihi in the mornings and support each other in learning their mihi.

Over the week classes have been enjoying learning about the meanings of different whakatauki, listening to Māori legends and learning some new kupu (words) in Te Reo Māori.

We finished the week with a fun Whānau Roopu event at school on Sunday afternoon. At our Whānau Roopu event we played games as a big group (which taught us some new words and encouraged some Te Reo Māori language use) and the explored some other games as smaller groups, as well as partake in some colouring in and then a yummy afternoon tea.

Thank you to all those families who came along on Sunday afternoon, we hope you had as much fun as we did!
