Literacy Quiz

Caroline Brown —

A group of four Year 6 pupils recently took part in a literacy quiz held at Dunedin North Intermediate.

The lit quiz was awesome.

Even though my team didn’t get a prize, or got a point score of 50+, I still had lots of fun.

The lit quiz was my first major quiz I've ever had (and might always be) and I honestly thought I was going to win, but even when we didn’t win, I thought we did.

The overall part that would flash a ‘No’ in 75% of people’s brains would be that the quiz took about 4 hours, but then if you heard that there was no school in that time it would probably motivate a lot of people, since quite a lot of people don’t like school very much.

Anyways, I didn’t really care about ‘no school’, I just wanted to do a big quiz for the first time in my life.

So as you would probably think, I was only a bit excited, as I didn’t like (as all people wouldn’t) the fact that I would feel guilt or sadness, although, in the end I actually didnt feel any of that, and the fact that I won 46% of the questions (there were 100 questions and my team got 46 right) helped a lot.

And my team (Joshua Grindlay, JP Otto, Caitlin Oliver and I) was really supportive, and they kept their cool, which kept mine.

All the teams tried their hardest, and I really think that's what a quiz is all about, having fun and helping others in your team, or teaching yourself new things.

Even preparation wasn’t necessary, because you just know the answers, or you don’t, and guess.

Overall, I had a really good time at the quiz, learnt some things, and got to be in a car with people I usually am not in.

On Friday the 9th April a Wakari School team, which had four members, went down to Dunedin North Intermediate. On the way down we had morning tea and we had to sign in before we entered. It was held in a hall where all the teams sat on mats. When we came into the hall we were handed a sheet of paper. Soon after we began. The quiz master asked a question about a book. There were 10 questions in one category. There were 10 categories and the whole thing went for about 3 hours. I enjoyed taking part in the quiz.

Well it was fun to be a part of it.

There isn't much to say about it really. Opoho School was first this year. Their prize was $250 which sure is a lot.

I'm really glad that I was even selected to participate.

It lasted 11:00am to 2:00pm so a very long time. I didn't think that 100 questions to go through would take that long.

Some of the topics we had were humour, construction, Christmas, body parts and how many. There were more than that though. I think our final score was 46/100.
