Year 6 Camp 2025

David Waddell —

Back in Week 2, our incredible Year 6 children embarked on an almighty adventure to Camp Columba!

On a fine February Tuesday morning the Year 6 children arrived all packed and ready to go for an amazing 3 night trip down to Camp Columba in Southland. It was a delayed start due to the water issue that morning but the children were so flexible and cheerful that this did not phase them at all! A big thank you as well to the families for your flexibility.

We got on the road and headed south, passing through the wonderful countryside along the way. After a lunch stop in Clinton, we continued on to the camp and got straight into the action! Beds were set up, bags unpacked and hats were put on ready for the first activity - a camp scavenger hut. After this activity and over the course of the next 4 days the children took part in rifle shooting, archery, high ropes, kayaking, bush craft, flying kiwi, raft building, adventure based learning, water slide, concrete slide and of course orienteering! We were busy!

The weather was absolutely fantastic throughout the whole camp which made getting on the water slide at 9:00am for one of the groups even more enjoyable! Every single one of the children were so impressive. I lost count of the amount of times I saw children pushing their comfort zones and achieving new things. This is the essence of these trips and I am just so proud of all of the campers!

The school camps would not be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers, teachers, support staff and the Pub Charity.

A huge thank you to our parent helpers, Emma Spalding, Courtney Hirt, Signe Stanbridge, Karen Caddick, Nick Swindells, Tom Mepham, Jamie Greene, Greg Ewing and Todd Landreth. Thank you also to our teachers, Katy Fitzgerald, Carolyn Robins, Lisa Lowden and Casey Irwin. Thank you to Bryce and Delwynne for all of their help in the organisation and also a huge thank you to Pub Charity for the grant they provided to help keep costs down.
