Cook Island Dancing

Katy Fitzgerald —

Steven has been visiting the school on Monday afternoons to teach children from the Middle and Senior Syndicates some dances from the Cook Islands.

Michaela -The Cook Islands dance music is very catchy. There are different songs and dances for the boys and girls. The dance songs and moves are really different from each other. It's funny watching the boys dance because they have to wobble their knees a lot. We use our arms to do different moves. The girls' song is very catchy and starts with us sitting on the ground. We use our hips to sway while we're moving our arms.

Yannic - I have enjoyed learning the boys' dance moves. It was hard work learning to use our arms and our legs to do different moves. You need to move your legs and your knees fast. Steven is a nice teacher who comes in each Monday afternoon to teach us. He is a parent from our school. I like listening to the Cook Islands dance music and learning the dances. I thought I would be the only boy but it turns out there are 2 others as well.

Hayley - I wanted to do Cook Island dancing because it sounded like something I would love and I don't regret doing it at all! It's super fun! We do it every Monday from 2:15-2:45 then we go back to class but it goes so fast! It goes for 30 minutes, so if you get a chance to do it you will have fun! I like the dance moves because they are easy to learn. The time goes really fast when we are learning them.

You can watch some videos of the Middle and Senior Syndicate dances on the school's Kapa Haka blog: https://wakarischoolkapahaka.blogspot.com/
