Headlice Treatment

Admin —

There have been a few cases of headlice recently. This article provides advice on how to check and treat your child's hair.

  • Check your child's hair EVERY DAY. There’s nothing to be ashamed of if your child has nits (remember that lice prefer clean hair). The key is for everyone to be vigilant and rid these pests from our school community.
  • Your family doctor can prescribe low cost treatment from the chemist.READ and FOLLOW the treatment INSTRUCTIONS – if not applied correctly it won’t work!  For a low cost solution, smother their hair with conditioner and cover with plastic wrap for at least 20min.  Then comb with a nit comb and repeat every alternate day for three weeks.

  • For more information you can:

          1. Collect a brochure from the school office
          2. Visit the Ministry of Health website

After treatment to prevent these nasty pests returning:

  • Talk to children about the importance of not sharing items that touch the head and avoid head to head contact.
  • Washing bedding, towels, hats and other household items that are more likely to be infested.
  • Tie hair back
  • Add Tea tree oil to your shampoo or conditioner
  • Check regularly

If your child is found to have head lice the office will call and ask you to collect your child.  Once they have been treated they can return back to school.
