Dunedin Solar Experts Visit Wakari School

David Waddell —

The amazing team at Dunedin Solar recently visited Wakari School to share their impressive knowledge with the hubs about how solar power generating works.

Wakari School was lucky enough to have the real-life experts from Dunedin Solar come and teach us all about solar electricity systems and whether it could be an option for us here at Wakari School.

Laura taught the Hubs a range of very interesting facts to do with solar energy. We learnt that solar panels convert the suns energy into something called "Direct Current" or "DC" for short. The inverter in the solar system then converts it to "Alternating Current" or "AC" so that it can be used for everyday appliances. The children played a game, chasing each other to grab pegs from each others sleeves. This represented particles in the solar panels moving quickly around which creates the energy.

Some further facts included that a good solution for our school would use 80 solar panels, that's right, 80! Another interesting fact was that just one hour of the suns energy hitting Earth is enough to power the entire planets needs for a whole year!

The children put together their own system layout using the resources Laura had prepared. They learnt how it is connected to the national grid and if we generated extra energy, we could even sell it back to the power companies. It is like we would be our own mini power station!

Finally, we had look at a real life solar panel as well as a replica of a battery pack that you can also purchase to store your extra energy.

A huge thank you to the team at Dunedin Solar and be sure to check out Miss DeCourcy's article showcasing some of our hubs writing based on solar energy.
