Small Ferns to Black Ferns Ambassadors

Caroline Brown —

Maia and Amelia and other local female rugby ambassadors had a great run around with Black Ferns, Stacey Waaka and Kendra Cocksedge last weekend at Logan Park. Maia and Amelia are keen to get more girls involved in rugby. Find out more below.

Hi, my name is Maia Epere. I am trying to interest girls to try playing rugby. I am 11 years old and I go to Wakari School. It is a great sport and I enjoy it. This is what brought me into rugby. One day I was watching my sister play rugby and I saw a ball, picked it up and I've never looked back. I was just three and a half. I have felt passionate since my finger tips touched that rugby ball. My goal is to become a better athlete and not only to inspire myself but to inspire other young girls too. Maybe you don’t think this is for you but I personally think you should give it a go. You might surprise yourself. I know you maybe scared of getting hurt but trust me, once i got hurt I felt like I had more power to succeed and achieve all of my goals and finish the year.

Rugby is a true inspiration for me in my life. It means the world to me and also shaped my personality.

Hi my name is Amelia McCulloch . I go to Wakari School like your kids. I am ten years old. I am a Year six and I play rugby. I have had to stop for a little bit because I broke my femur in a motorbike accident but I will be getting back into rugby when I am all better.

I want to get more girls into rugby because it is a great sport and I love it! Yes, maybe you're scared of getting hurt but you should see the Black Ferns. They are really good at rugby. Do you know that they played rugby when they were in Year 4, 5 and 6. My friend Maia Epere and I would love if you would get your daughter into rugby. We are holding rugby sessions at school for Year 4, 5 and 6 girls who have signed up to do rugby.

Empower females to promote rugby for females in schools.

Encourage more girls to get involved in rugby.

More girls giving rugby a go

more girls driving the direction,

more girls in leadership.
