Fun times at our Whānau Wānanga! (Family Day/Workshop)

Heather Bonney —

On Saturday we hosted a Whānau Wānanga (Family Day/Workshop) at Wakari School. This was an opportunity for our families to come together and explore some of our beautiful Māori arts - such as Oamaru stone carving and flax weaving (harakeke).

Thank you to all our families who came along to explore the activities on offer at the weekend. The morning started with an opening karakia (prayer) and waiata (song) that our enthusiastic  children performed for us. Then our families tried their hand at Oamaru stone carving, flax weaving, poi making, taiaha (long sticks), creating tukutuku panel patterns and colouring in pictures of Māori atua (gods). We hope you all had as much fun as we did!

A huge thank you to the amazing helpers from Otago Girls High School (some of whom were former Wakari students) who came along to support our learning!
